Philip Brown

Philip Brown is employed as a trombonist in Sønderjylland's Symphony Orchestra from April 2013.

Philip Brown, American by birth, was appointed Principal Trombone of the South Denmark Philharmonic in 2013. He previously served as Second Trombone with the SDP from 2008 to 2013. Brown has also performed as a guest trombonist with the BBC Philharmonic, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Prior to moving to Denmark, he was Assistant Professor of Trombone and Brass Area Coordinator at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Brown began his musical training as a student of Raymond Conklin, former Professor of Trombone at Murray State University in Kentucky. As a young student under Conklin's instruction, he was named the National Winner of the 1992 Music Teachers National Association Senior Brass Competition. Brown continued his education at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying under Raymond Premru. He completed additional graduate studies in music at the University of Minnesota, where he was twice a finalist at the prestigious international Zellmer—Minnesota Orchestra Trombone Competition. Brown completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Washington in 2007 with Don Immel, who himself has been a member of the South Denmark Philharmonic.

Brown started his professional career in the Seattle area, serving as Principal Trombone with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and Northwest Sinfonietta. He frequently performed with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, and also made appearances with the New World Symphony, Oregon Symphony, and Honolulu Symphony. Also during that time, Brown performed on over 70 soundtracks for major motion pictures, television and video games.

An active arranger, Brown has arranged several works performed by the South Denmark Philharmonic, both for full orchestra and for various chamber ensembles. His arrangements have been performed across the United States as well as in Japan.
