In an all-too-short life, Schubert managed to compose masterpieces in virtually every genre. He is best known for the creation of the lied – the third work of art that arises when unique poetry merges with a musical illumination in the form of piano accompaniment. But also within the lied's complete opposite – the fully developed symphony – Schubert composed masterpieces with a sure hand. He has written two symphonies in C major. There is disagreement about the numbering of the symphonies, and there is also uncertainty as to whether he managed to hear the work before his death. The nickname "Den Store C major" is due to the fact that the symphony broke the boundaries of how far composers could stretch the symphonic form.
